St. Stephen Church – A Legacy in Iron

Located on the shores of the Golden Horn in Istanbul’s historic Balat district, the St. Stephen Church (commonly known as the “Iron Church”) is one of the few surviving iron churches in the world. Officially opened for worship in 1898, it stands as a powerful symbol of the Bulgarian Orthodox community’s pursuit of religious autonomy during the late Ottoman period.

Constructed entirely from prefabricated cast iron elements produced in Vienna, the church was rapidly assembled in Istanbul—a feat inspired by the community’s determination to establish an independent place of worship. It remains the only Orthodox church in the world built entirely of iron.

Today, St. Stephen Church is a prominent cultural and historical landmark open to visitors daily. Its richly decorated interior, featuring ornate frescoes and a striking iconostasis, offers a captivating spiritual and artistic experience. Guided tours are available for those wishing to explore the church’s unique history in greater depth.

Following a visit, guests are encouraged to explore the surrounding Balat neighborhood, known for its vibrant streets, historic architecture, and welcoming local atmosphere.
