Maiden’s Tower

One of the most iconic landmarks of the Bosphorus is undoubtedly the Maiden’s Tower. Built on a small islet off the coast of Salacak, this historic tower is surrounded by many legends. Among the most well-known is the tale of Leander, from which the tower also takes one of its alternative names — Leander’s Tower.

According to the legend, Leander and Hero were two lovers separated by the sea. Every night, Hero, who lived in the tower, would light a lantern to guide Leander as he swam across the Bosphorus to reach her. One stormy night, someone else—aware of their secret meetings—lit the lantern in Hero’s place, deceiving Leander. Thinking Hero was waiting for him, Leander dived into the dark waters, only to be lost in the violent waves. Unable to bear the pain of his death, Hero threw herself from the tower, ending her life in sorrow. In memory of the lovers, a lighthouse was said to have been built on the site.

Dating back to 24 BC, the Maiden’s Tower has served many purposes throughout its long history, including as a defense fortress, exile station, prison, quarantine facility, radio station, customs checkpoint, and lighthouse. Today, it stands as a symbol of Üsküdar. After being restored by a private enterprise in 2000, the tower was reopened to the public and now operates as a café and restaurant during the day.
